Stop-motion animation is a visual storytelling form that conjures the illusion of movement by combining multiple stills to create motion and convey an idea.

This is one of the simplest, most fun animation techniques.

All you need is a camera, a computer, and your imagination.

Flashy computer-generated animation is currently all the rage. But a good stop-motion can be easily more powerful and impressive. It also has a rich heritage of its own. Think about something like Wallace and Gromit, for example, or more recently, the Lego Movie. Both filmed as stop-motion animation.

First things first, you need an awesome idea.

What do you wish to animate? What do you want to bring to life?

You may wish to make, a sock shuffle across the floor like a sad slug, or make a piece of paper crumple itself up. Keep in mind that you can expect to shoot around 10 photos for every second of film.

One of the toughest part of creating a stop motion is getting the camera angle and lighting exactly the same for every image so that the stop motion doesn’t judder as it plays with moving shadows. The only thing that changes is your animated item.

Which is where our studio comes into its own.

The Animation Guys recently moved into the office right next door to us. As their name suggests they make animated videos. They aren’t limited to animation though. They are an end-to-end video production company offering some of the highest quality, and most innovative work around, right through from concept to post-production.

They make everything from music videos for the likes of Jason Derulo, to animated shorts for the likes of Coca Cola.

Recently, they worked with The Drum on the ‘Do It Day’ campaign video. When they came across a small problem, their minds lept almost immediately to us.

How to animate the magazine? They wanted to use the actual magazine. So they popped next door to see us in the studio. We’d never done anything like it before, but Theo from the Animation guys happily took control of the process to create the stop motion magazine opening animation that can be seen at the start and end of the video.

Our Styleshoot machines are full photographic studios with a fixed camera and lighting meaning you get perfectly consistent shots every time. They hopped onto the vertical machine, and with some clever use of wires they were done!

They then headed back to their office to liberally douse the stop-motion with some of the animated magic. They overlayed the stop-motion with their Drumion animation really bringing it to life!

The Drum’s mission is to empower marketers to change the world and that is precisely what ‘Do It Day’ is about. This year The Drum will be focus on destigmatizing mental health.

On the 10th of October they will invite the industry to set up a marketing campaign strategy which will then be launched on the 16th November.

In the run-up to the campaign launch, the teams will spend a couple of hours a week meeting and laying the groundwork for the launch.

‘It’s crazy, it’s hard, and you’ll think it’s impossible, but it’s amazing the power a small team can have when they put their mind to it.’ – The Drum
